Merchant House, despite all it’s fame can still be a hard one to find if you don’t know where to look – a proper speakeasy through and through. Tucked away on Well Court, just off Bow Lane is this basement bar with one of the biggest spirits selections in the city and armfuls of accolades to its name. Based on the history of the merchant trade, rum and gin are the order of the day here with hundreds filling their back bar and some very rare bottles in their collection. Old maps adorn the walls, plush leather armchairs fill all the nooks and corners, or when you’re feeling indecisive you can pull up a pew at the bar – where the bartenders really know their stuff – to be guided through the menu or extensive spirit collection, and have something tasty made for you.
