I used to be a top-of-the-class student but I didn’t realise how much my self-worth relied on others looking up to me or my relatives boasting about the achievements which, to be honest - came pretty naturally to me. But they just never felt like achievements.
With bartending - I’ve had to work really hard to be where I’m at. To feel that sense of belonging and community with your colleagues. For a long time I struggled with what other people thought of my career choice. And so my journey in hospitality in my twenties has been about self-acceptance. If we want to make hospitality more than a stop-gap job, then, let’s stop treating it like it is.
